A cold and slow spring
The season started late. After a fairly regular winter, spring remained colder than usual. Budbreak was slow, and the clusters needed more time to develop. This led to a more contained vegetative phase, with vines accumulating energy without rushing. While this required greater attention in the vineyard, it also favored a natural balance, reducing the risk of early stress.
From June onwards: a sudden change
The arrival of summer marked a clear turning point: within a few days temperatures exceeded 30°C, driving rapid growth in the vineyards. Such a marked thermal shift had two effects: more compact, sugar-rich clusters, but also the need to carefully monitor plant hydration to avoid imbalances. Organic farming, which at Dianella is a consolidated choice, means we intervene only when necessary, respecting the natural rhythms of the vineyard.
First impressions of quality
Field inspections these days suggest that 2025 will be a vintage with limited yields but potentially very high quality. The clusters are healthy, with small berries and thick skins: a positive sign for aromatic concentration and for red wines, especially our Sangiovese. The first analyses confirm a good balance between sugars and acidity, a factor that points to wines that are both fresh and structured.
What to expect from the 2025 wines
This will be a year in which each grape variety will express its identity differently:
- Sangiovese: expected to show an elegant profile, with fine tannins and excellent acidity.
- Cabernet Franc and Merlot: benefited from the high July temperatures, with rich, ripe fruit.
- Orpicchio: our rare native white variety will likely display more intense, mineral notes thanks to the day-night temperature range.
The philosophy of Villa Dianella
Harvest is the culmination of a year’s work, of decisions made in the vineyard, and of respect for the land. This is why at Villa Dianella we continue to follow the principle of certified organic farming, cultivating sustainably and preserving biodiversity. Each vintage is a story in itself, and 2025 is already showing us a chapter rich in nuances, from which wines will be born that truly represent Montalbano and our history.
